Installation of the Royal Albert Hall Helix
The manufacture of the components took around 12 weeks from April to June 2003.
More than 1500 individual components had to be precisely machined and polished.
Installation was carried out in a seven day window during June 2003.
There was a tight deadline looming ... The Proms!
1.5mm radial support cables screwed into the ceiling.
Working 18 feet up in the air.
Tying the radial support cable and strut to the temporary rope.
The Helix starts to take shape (Luke Lowings, the Architect, on the phone).
Putting tension into the Helix main support cables ( James Arrowsmith & Tony Williams, S3i ).
Our unique tensioner; unique because it allows articulation and all adjusting threads are hidden.
Adding the mirror elements (Valerie Spalding, designer).
Almost there.
Finished.
