Information

A shackle pin is threaded at one end and has a flattened head at the other end.

To open the shackle, the shackle key is placed over this flattened end and turned to unscrew the pin.

Because shackle pins are usually screwed up very tight, to avoid them coming undone at a critical moment, they usually cannot be unscrewed without a shackle key.
