Flight for Itsu Heathrow - Cinimod Studio
Bespoke Lighting Sculpture for Itsu Restaurant
S3i are proud to have worked with Cinimod Studios to produce bespoke stainless steel wire assembilies for their "Flight" sculpture installed at the new Itsu restaurant situated in Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport.
This mesmerising lighting feature was commissioned as a celebration of Itsu's move to a bigger space within terminal 5.
Cinimod Studio brief was to create an ambitious intervention that would transcend the buildings split level arrangement.
The result is a dramatic 12 metre angled mast rising from the ground floor and reaching into the airspace of the terminal building.
The tensioned system of stainless steel cables traverses the space, from which seventy-two dichroic butterflies hang, creating a beautiful canopy of shimmering light and colour.
Custom 6mm stainless steel cables with fork tensioner fittings act as the main support, providing a strong catenary style backbone for the illuminated butterflies.
Small translucent rubber tubes were placed onto the main cable to act as fixing points for each individual butterfly.
Seventy-two smaller wire rope slings have been produced to connect each individual butterfly to the main cable supports.
